Central to my practice is the way I move fluidly between drawing, painting, and ceramics in the studio. There’s a constant dialogue between material, surface, and form as works develop across the walls, floor, and tables. Quite often, the relationship between two- and three-dimensional works evolves in a linear way. I make drawings outside the studio in sketchbooks, which then develop into larger works on paper. Paintings begin on the walls, and from there, ideas are pushed and pulled into space as ceramic sculptures take form.

Spatial Play reconsiders this ongoing dialogue. Through developing a material framework and exploring the shared qualities of raw linen, raw clay, raw card, white primer, and majolica glaze, I’ve not only pulled ideas into space but also started to flatten sculptural language and form. This body of work extends my exploration of place, movement, and mapping, while also beginning to consider the role of other spatial relationships in my practice. Boundaries, structures, order, and the line as disruptor are all ideas that flow between mediums.

The use of matte and gloss surfaces has been a consistent technique in my ceramic work—both as a compositional tool and a way to express ideas of opposition, light, and shadow. Working with raw linen, raw card, and primer has allowed me to carry some of this thinking into the surfaces of my two-dimensional works, shifting the way I approach painting.
